"ILLUMINATE” ART INSTALLATION.

INTERIORS PROJECT : JUNIOR YEAR

PHOTOSHOP RENDER OVER SKETCHUP

PROJECT BRIEF

“There is so much more to this world than outward appearances. Our society basis in the illusion of normalcy every day and hides fro the truth every night.” [Amber Benson]. Our perception of ugly produce is informed appearance - but appearance does not inform substance.

The study of ugly produce versus perfect produce and its implications upon consumer perception becomes a metaphor for society’s ideals and standards of perfection and normalcy. the contrast between perception versus reality is illustrated through the installation’s transparent qualities during the day and its vibrant, dynamic appearance during the evening.

Clear, acrylic blocks allow light to pass through and offset two tall, black acrylic blocks that stand out during the daylight, but recede into the background and reflect light and color as the clear, acrylic blocks light up at night.

PHOTOSHOP RENDER : DAY TIME VIEW

Each block within the landscape is purposely out of proportion to the human scale in order to emphasize how society mindsets can cause things that do not fit the standards of normalcy to be exaggerated. The black blocks act as arches for humans to pass underneath; the space is extremely narrow inside in order to articulate how the ideals of normalcy and perfection trap us and render us virtually immobile.

User experience is affected by the creation of multiple interiors within an exterior installation. Furthermore, the voids between each block allow for user movement; while the installation’s message of reinterpreting/reinvestigating society’s ideals of normalcy and nuanced and not explicitly explained, it is up to the user to decide what the installation means to them and how it can change the way they view others, themselves, and the societal standards they adhere to.
